  1. When you do a little research you learn that sisal scratching posts are the best type to get – cats love it. Also, if you give your cats a carpet post they learn that scratching carpet is okay, which it is not since consistent scratching destroys carpets. So sisal is definitely the way to go.

With all of that in mind, I purchased this sisal scratching post. My cat thoroughly enjoyed the feel of the sisal. The problem with this is that it has a small base which is very unstable. If your cat stands on the base itself, it’s fine. But the minute my cat stood just outside the base to scratch, which is very easy to do since the base is so small, the scratching post tipped over. It actually fell on my cat. Since it’s light, she was uninjured.

Unless you plan to screw this post into the floor or create a large base that you can attach it to permanently, this is not the best option for your cat. It may be worth considering a larger, more stable sisal covered post or cat tree.

  2. This scratching post is shaped like a cone and is a decent height for my grown cats. It looks very nice and stands up to the hardest scratching. My problem was that since it is hollow, the cats kept knocking it over and I was afraid they might get a bit too curious and stick their heads in the inside of the cone and get stuck. I added some velcro to the bottom of the base and to the carpet it is on. It holds up fine now and for the price it satisfies me, and my cats like it much better now that it doesn’t tip over. Just need a little imagination. Kathy Domenech Vacaville, Ca.

I have been using this type of scratching post for years, its shape is

the best for the cat as they tend to drag down with their claws. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that you have to weight the

bottom for heavier cats..no biggy Still the best shape on the market,I have tried them all.

I do anchor my scratching posts with some heavy rocks around the bottom,

common sense tells you that if a cat is going to pull with their weight

on the post,it prevents it from tipping over.

I have a 17 lb cat and it works great.

I purchased the product as a replacement for an aging but well used sisal rope cone. My cat made a beeline for the post, but was quickly frustrated because the cone kept tipping over. The move from heavy cone to light plastic base was a big mistake by the manufacturer, and the resulting product has less value. I am planning to returnn the product to Amazon.com. This product is not suitable for 8lb. cats or larger.

  5. I understand the poor reviews because of a tipping over problem. However, this one works best for my cat because it is wider at the bottom. I solved the tipping over problem by placing a 4.4 lb plastic weight that goes on a barbell inside of the bottom opening. My cat weighs 15 lbs and it works great. I’m sure not everyone will have a set of weights to use but could substitute something else.
