I haven’t been pleased with Just the Crystals (as compared to the Scoop Right crystals that come in the disposable packs).
I have 2 cats.
There are 2 primary reasons for going back to Scoop Right:
- Within 5 days, one of the cats will poop outside of the box, basically screaming to me that something isn’t right with the box. The Scoop Right crystals will go about twice as long before anything like that would happen. Cost savings associated with purchasing this product is nulled by the increased frequency of switching the crystals out, and difficulty is compounded by the non disposable nature of the permanent pan.
- The crystals are much noisier than the Scoop Right crystals. As in, I’m on a conference call and the people on the other side of the line can hear the cat scooping from the other room. Not kidding.

I love my Forever Litter Box tray and also “Just the Crystals”. I have to change the box weekly, because I have two cats who “fill it up” frequently. I love the convenience of having the crystals delivered to my door. The cost is a little higher, but I’m busy so it’s worth it. These are high quality products, and I plan to use them forever. I recently bought the litterbox cover, and I have a complete system that I love.

Eventually some smart entrepreneur had to come up with a better mousetrap for the disposable cartridges designed for the Scoop Free.
Not only has this product (in conjunction with the Forever Tray) saved money, it is an intrinsically better design. Case in point. One of my two cats is 15 and has developed a kidney condition as the result of 2 years on anti-inflammatory meds. Accordingly, he drinks more water and goes more frequently. The original cartridge can, in the case of heavy urination, seep into the cardboard tray and reek sooner than the time it takes for complete saturation and expiration of the crystals. This is somewhat ameliorated with regular mixing and stirring of the crystals, but that defeats some of the carefree advantages of the purchase of the Scoop Free. I should also point out that the tray is easy to clean in a standard utility sink after dumping to sanitize before re-use.
Just the Crystals was formulated out of common sense and necessity as indicated on the company website. It’s granular size was adjusted to be somewhere between the Fresh Step and Tidy Cat versions as this was found to be a better compromise on the mechanism, preventing clogging or uneven spreading. The packaging was made in two convenient 4.4lb bags which 1) was determined to be a better (and more generous) fill level than the Scoop Free cartridges and 2) easily shipped in non-plastic containers.

I like this litter just for the fact that it is pre-measured and I don’t have to get out my scale and weigh out the perfect amount. Plus I love having it delivered to my door… That is totally worth it in my opinion!!!
That being said, I still prefer Fresh Step crystal litter. It seems to last a tiny bit longer and with less odor. Both litters have tracking problems with my cats. I don’t have any real complaints with this litter, it is convenient, it does the job and that is what counts.
But this is a good price, less than most of the pet store brands or name brands, plus the crystals are just the right size. I love my Forever Litter tray and will never go back to any other automatic cat box system. I will continue to buy this brand.
